What to write in a grandmother's birthday card 🖊️

One of the first things you’ll want to establish when figuring out what to write in your grandmother’s birthday card is the tone. Older generations tend to be more reserved—unless your grandma’s the free-spirited type. In that case, you may want to get her a sassy card as opposed to a sentimental one.

As for what to write on the inside of the card, choosing the right words isn’t as difficult as you might think. Just follow along and you’ll be writing like a pro before you can say, “Watch where you’re swinging that cane, Gram!”

Pick out a birthday card

First thing’s first: choose a card. If there’s already a lot of text on the cover or inside, a simple “Happy Birthday, Grandma” will suffice—though you can always add more if you’d like. There’s no right or wrong here; just try to keep the tone of your message cohesive with the card.

Take this funny birthday card for older ladies, for example. Writing “Happy Birthday, Grandma” on the inside doesn’t quite mesh with the rest of the text.

Cover: All this time I thought you had tricks up your sleeves.

Inside: What’s with the tissues?

Text A: Happy birthday, Grandma!

Text B: And looking so good for your age? Happy birthday!

Notice how Text B flows more naturally and feels less abrupt than Text A.

Create a rough draft

Sometimes the best ideas come to light when you least expect them—like when you’re doodling or jotting things down. Some folks prefer pen and paper, while others swear by their phone, PC, tablet, or laptop. Just remember: there’s no right or wrong. If you come down with a case of writer’s block, you can always return to it later with a fresh mind, time permitting.

Here’s a sentimental birthday card that does all the work for you. All you really need to do is sign your name, though you can add more if you feel compelled.

Inside: Love outweighs all else. Happy birthday, GRAM!

Sign, seal, deliver

Once you’ve decided what to write, give the ink a moment to dry so it doesn’t smudge. Keep in mind that first-class mail typically takes 3–5 business days, give or take, so plan accordingly. And consider pairing the card with a gift that matches its theme—or vice versa. Even something as silly as a loaf of naan bread to match a quirky birthday card can make her smile.

Now it’s your turn to come up with something to write:
