FAQ
✅ Recyclable greeting cards:
• Made of plain paper or cardstock
• Printed with non-metallic inks
• No glitter, foil, plastic, ribbons, or glued-on decorations
You can place these in your regular paper recycling bin.
❌ Not recyclable greeting cards:
• Cards with glitter, foil, metallic inks
• Cards with plastic windows, buttons, or glued embellishments
• Musical cards with batteries or electronic parts
These need to be thrown in the trash, or the battery/electronic part should be removed and taken to an e-waste center, if possible.
When mailing a greeting card, the number of stamps you need depends mainly on the card’s size, thickness, and weight.
✉️ Standard Greeting Card Stamp Requirements:
• One First-Class Forever Stamp (currently 66¢ in the U.S. as of 2025)
• Covers a standard-sized, rectangular card up to 1/4 inch thick and weighing up to 1 ounce
• Typical size: 5 x 7 inches or smaller
• No extra decorations or bulky elements
When You Might Need More Than One Stamp:
• If the card is oversized (larger than 6-1/8 inches tall, 11-1/2 inches long, or 1/4 inch thick)
• If the card weighs more than 1 ounce (e.g., with extra inserts, photos, or heavy cardstock)
• If the card is square-shaped — square envelopes require additional postage
How to Check Exact Postage:
• Weigh your card and envelope on a kitchen scale
• Use the USPS postage price calculator online
• Visit the post office for precise postage to avoid delays or return
A typical greeting card weighs between 0.5 and 1 ounce (about 14 to 28 grams), depending on its size, paper quality, and any additional embellishments.
Typical Weight Breakdown:
• Standard 5 x 7 inch card on cardstock: ~0.6 to 0.9 ounces
• Cards with envelopes: usually around 1 ounce total
• Heavier cards with multiple layers, inserts, or decorations can weigh more than 1 ounce, which may require additional postage
Why Card Weight Matters:
• Postal rates are based on weight — cards under 1 ounce usually need only one First-Class Forever Stamp (currently 66¢ in the U.S.)
• Cards over 1 ounce require additional postage
• Knowing the weight helps avoid mailing delays or return to sender
