Thank you for taking the time to put thought into figuring out what to write in a graduation card. Wanting to celebrate their hard work with the perfect message can stump even the most seasoned writers, so just know you’re not alone. Luckily, we’re here to help nudge you in the right direction with a quick and easy how-to guide.

Start by choosing a graduation card

Once you’ve decided on the perfect card, you can use it as your inspiration. Take our Smarty Pants graduation card, for example. It’s blank on the inside, so there’s a ton of space you can utilize—or not—since less tends to be more at times. The key is to try and stick with the theme of the card, whether you opt for a lengthy or short message inside. In short, there are no rules—or if there are, feel free to break them!

Suggested text inside: You get your smarts from me. Shh, don’t tell Dad. Happy Graduation, son!

Brainstorm away

Break out the good old paper and pen or your favorite word processor and start jotting down your ideas. Don’t be afraid to just run with it, no matter how silly it sounds. The best ideas often come out of nowhere. Just take our artsy graduation card for kids, for example. It’s playful, cute, and sends a positive message, so there’s plenty of room for creativity here.

Button up any loose ends

Now that you have a good idea of how to tackle the writing aspect, you can breathe easy. If you’re still having trouble, don’t be hard on yourself. It’s the thought that truly counts, even if you end up taking the “less is more” approach. Take our graduation card for college students, for example. It has a ton of fun text already, so not much else is needed.
